Went to Long Beach around 7AM for some surf fishing with Connor before church. It was a beautiful morning, sunny and breezy. The water was pretty cold, and fairly clear. SO many diving birds, and baitfish jumping out of the water. And several times, we saw flashes of white underbelly of pretty big halibut jumping clear out of the water!! It did not look like we had to cast too far out there to get into the halibut action.
I brought my 8'6" Shimano Clarus, and Connor's 7-ft Fenwick HMX rod, so he could work on his casting. We fished the mild LBC surf for about 2.5 hours, and I didn't get much of anything on my LuckyCraft lure. Connor, using a smelt 3" BigHammer swimbait, brought in a small sting ray, a little kelp fish, .. and this terrific HALIBUT. 18-inches! And, from cast to releasing it, Connor did it all. Way to go!
Near the end, we get a surprise visitor from a SEA LION that practically swims right up to Connor... WOW!
